Match is located in the revitalized SoNo historic district of South Norwalk, Connecticut, which has become an arts and entertainment nighttime destination. The mandate from the owners was to make their new restaurant as "edgy" as possible. Conceived as a series of juxtaposed architectural inventions, Match offers its customers a playful escape for relaxed dining.
Within the sandblasted brick walls of the existing space, a corrugated, translucent fiberglass bar-back and shed-like canopy define the primary bar area as backlighting creates an orange, radiant glow. Further lighting is provided by a series of architect-designed chandeliers fabricated from plumbing pipe and electrical conduit, along with internally lit fabric-covered fiberglass cylinders. The quarter inch thick sandblasted stainless steel countertops on the bar tops are an expression of "edginess." Complimenting this effect are free-standing stainless steel cylindrical dining booths that not only add to the restaurant's interesting composition, but also provide customers with a semi-private dining area in a privileged space.
The perforated steel enclosure that houses the architect-designed pizza oven unifies the main space as its internal lighting system exaggerates the scale of the prefabricated oven within. The oven and its flames are visible to pedestrians through the operable glass storefront, and serve as an enticement to patrons as they enter the front door. Inspired by industrial furnaces, the glowing pizza oven provides a visual focal point within the 1,600 square foot space that assures Match will spark the interest of future customers for years on end.
