Norwalk,
Connecticut Fifty Day Street involved the conversion of a 20,000 square foot, four-story toy factory (c.1877) constructed of brick and heavy timber into a new office facility with the two upper floors owner-occupied by a publishing company. A new, sixteen-foot square tower was added to the existing building for the provision of vertical circulation and handicapped access. This tower element, banded in layers of split and ground face concrete block and capped with a blue metal roof, acts as a landmark and gives the building an identifiable image from afar. The exterior stair that climbs up the building animates its south side and gives the building a playfulness and accessibility which marks a bold contrast to the conservative corporate look of most regional office structures.
