Greenwich,
Connecticut Located on an eight-acre site, this 5,000 square foot addition to an existing two-story residence sits atop a gently sloping hill that stretches out to meet a lake below. While the character of the existing house is acknowledged in its materials and spirit, the addition asserts a Palladian influence in response to the owner's love of 16th Century Italian Architecture. The program required the addition to be strongly oriented toward entertaining, but also usable as a quiet retreat from the main house. The new construction encompasses a large central rotunda, a small stage for music and theater, various terraces, a winter garden, and a working greenhouse. Radiating out from the rotunda, each of the four wings allows for differing entertainment functions. Throughout the addition, large wall areas are provided for displaying the owner's collection of art. The design solution reconciles the various requirements in the form of an architectural "folly." The notion of a Palladian villa in a vast English garden had tremendous romantic appeal to the owner. Services |
