Rowayton,
Connecticut This house seeks to strike a balance between its context in an area of Victorian houses and the owners' desire for a simple, quiet house that was not overly embellished with decorative detailing. This challenge lead us to conceive the house as a simple Boat-Barn, slightly overscaled like many New England Barns, reflecting the owners' lifestyle and seeming as if it had always been there. To maximize views out to the Five Mile River from the major living spaces, the house is composed of two wings - one a cathedral ceilinged Family Room, and the larger second wing housing the Kitchen, Dining Area, Entry, and three bedrooms above. A cupola accessible by a spiral stair provides views of Long Island Sound in the distance and brings light deep into the core of the house. The Hurwitt Residence draws its inspiration not from the main, formal houses on the street but from the outbuildings in their rear yards. Pattern, proportion and informed use of simple traditional materials were important elements of the design. Services |
