Westport,
Connecticut Along the banks of the Saugatuck River, this house was the winning entry in House Beautiful's "Best Small House" competition in 1988. The publication invited architects to submit designs for a 1,800 square foot house, with the winning design subsequently built. In the same year, this project was also made notable for receiving an AIA Design Award. The house was conceived as a "Grand American Cottage," rich in American traditions, craftsmanship, and spirit. A small house with the scale and grandeur of a mansion, it possesses the warmth and charm that speaks of home. Starting with newel posts that are miniature representations of the house, elements are fancifully proportioned, similar to those in a child's drawing. The small openings in the north façade provide privacy from the street, while the south façade opens toward the river beyond. Overall, the house's whimsical jumps in scale have an "Alice in Wonderland" quality. Services |
